Reflection on Technical Communication 1

The goals I had at the start of this course that I would like to achieve upon the completion of this module was to develop my effectiveness in communication skills and to gain more confidence when presenting to a large group. Trimester 1 was rather intensive, but I have learned a lot from this period. Not only was I able to gain relevant knowledge from our lecturer, but I was also able to push myself to be more effective and efficient in my learning in this fast-paced environment.

I felt that I have improved in my communication skills as I was given the chance to work with many classmates due to the non-static nature of grouping/pairing especially at the beginning of the module. In terms of gaining more confidence when presenting, I felt that I was given a good opportunity to practice during the oral presentation. Although our project group did not get selected for the showcase, the experience helped boosted my confidence greatly. However, I feel that there is still plenty of room for improvement, such as allocating more time to be well-prepared and being more engaging to the audience while I present. Nevertheless, I can say that my team and I had a great time learning, working and rehearsing together. As for the technical report writing, I am thankful for my group members for their guidance as I felt that I lack in the terms of writing skills as compared to them. To me, working with my project group resonates the most with me as I felt that we had great synergy together.

The presentation showcase itself was quite an eye-opening experience. I was really impressed by how well some presenters could present. They were very engaging and confident in their presentation. They had good energy and could articulate their words loudly and clearly. Some had a very good understanding of their product without having any breaks into thought during their speech, which is important to maintain the audience’s attention. Through this, I was able to take away a valuable lesson and strive to be able to give a presentation of equal calibre in the future.

  1. Thanks very much, WeiHao, for this detailed reflection. I appreciate that you made an effort to address your module goals and to some degree your achievements. The review of your research team's work is especially supportive. It's great that you and your teammates jelled with one another.

I'm also happy to learn that you valued the showcase. Was there any team in particular that you liked?

All in all, you made a very good effort this term. All the best as you continue your learning journey!
